Parent Information

Opening Times
Picture of children going into School

The school door will open at 9:10am. Teachers do not accept responsibility before this time. The children will enter the school independently and play in the school yard under the supervision of a teacher, until the bell goes at 9:20am. It is our aim to have all children in class and settled by 9:30am.

Please try to avoid unnecessary disruption of classes after this time.

Breaks - There are two breaks during the normal school day. A short break from 11am to 11:10am and a longer break from 12:30pm to 1pm.

Home Time - At 2pm the infants will be taken to the side door by the teacher. When the teacher arrives at the side door the parents can come up to the ramp and take their child. The children will be in a line so please wait until your child comes to the top of the line rather than calling him/her from the back. This way the teacher can be sure that each child is in safe hands.

Children from 1st to 6th class finish school at 3pm.

Food
Pictue of Lunchbox

We have a Healthy Eating Policy. Sweets; crisps; fizzy drinks etc. are not allowed for lunch.

Children are encouraged to bring a healthy lunch such as sandwich, fruit, yoghurt and drink of water/juice.

On Friday children are allowed to bring one small treat with their lunch.

Parking
Parking Sign

Unfortunately, our car park is unable to facilitate all the parents at the same time. We would ask parents to park in the spaces only.

Please do not park on yellow lines or on the yellow box. Please vacate car park as soon as your child is brought in by the teacher.

Toys

There is no need for children to bring toys into school.

We do not encourage this practice because of breakage, competition and peer pressure.

Invitations/Cards
Birthday Invitation

It is school policy that invitations to birthday parties are not distributed on the school premises.

This is out of consideration for non-receivers.

Absences
Attedance Register picture

If your child is absent due to sickness, family reasons etc. please inform the school in writing. If a child misses 20 or more days from school the Principal has a duty to report these absences to the National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB).

When a report is forwarded to the NEWB parents will be informed. The NEWB may follow up such reports and contact the parents. Under no circumstances should a sick child be sent to school. It is unfair on the child, the other children in the class and the teacher.

Communication with Parents
Picture of Newsletters

Please keep an eye on your child’s school bag as it might contain notes for parents. The school also uses “Text-a-Parent” to remind parents of events or to inform them of emergency closures etc. Please ensure that the school has one current mobile phone contact at all times for “Text-a-Parent”. If you change that number, please inform the school secretary immediately.

It would also be great if you could download the ‘Text-a-Parent’ app on your smartphone as this will help to cut costs for the school.

Please do not hesitate to approach the teacher if you are anxious about some issue relating to your child. However, if you wish a more detailed discussion please arrange a convenient time in advance e.g. telephone the secretary or send in a note..

Health and Safety
Picture of Hands being washed

As part of our school health programme we encourage regular washing of hands especially around eating time and after toilet use. It is also very important to explain to the child that he/she must flush the toilet after use. It is not possible to oversee this so please remind your child of its importance.

Other hygienic practises that need to be encouraged are using tissues for coughing and sneezing.

Stop Germs Spreading

* Wash your Hands
* Cover a cough
* Use a tissue

If your child develops any contagious illness such as chickenpox please keep him/her away from school until the period of contagion is over and inform the teacher immediately.

We recommend that you check your child regularly for lice and scabies (both of which are highly contagious), treat immediately if they occur and inform the teacher so that notification of possible risk may be sent out to other parents. All information regarding your child’s health is treated in the strictest confidence.

Assessment
Assessment picture

Continuous informal assessment will be made by the teacher. At the end of the Senior Infants our Special Education Teacher will oversee a standardised test after which extra support will be available if necessary.

Parent-Teacher meetings take place once during the year. A written report is sent at the end of each year.
